Summer in Norway: from the Fjords to the Lofoten Islands

The Norwegian capital is both urban and close to the water and the fields, and can be explored through its towering buildings and picturesque villages, its islands and pine and larch forests. There's always a focus on nature.

No other train runs between two European cities at an altitude as high as that between Oslo and Bergen. The line crosses the country from east to west, rolling out impressive mountain scenery, especially when crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateaux. Upon arrival in Bergen, you'll spend two nights in the city in an old-fashioned hotel known for its historical style.

In the valley surrounded by seven hills served by two cable cars, Norway's second largest city has capitalised on its provincial charm for visitors who come here to discover the attractions of a historic city in a relaxed atmosphere deeply rooted in nature.

Things to see and do Climb to the top of Mount Floyen by funicular to admire the magnificent landscapes of the fjords - walk back down to the city, passing by the forest and the residential district of Sandvika - saddle up and discover the city along its cycling routes - stroll between the colourful wooden houses of the old Hanseatic district of Bryggen - tour the coast by sea kayak - enjoy a meal of freshly caught fish.

Pick up your hire car and drive northeast towards Flam, nestled in the enchanting landscape of the fjords. Along the way, you'll stop off at Tvinde Falls and Fano Waterfall. Spend the night in a wooden hotel, overlooking the Aurland fjord and mountains.

Already included - A boat trip on the Naeroyfjord (with a guide), to discover the history of the fjord, the region, and the local wildlife.

Option - Flam scenic train, an iconic experience.

Head north via Borgund, home to one of the country's finest standing wooden churches, and then continue along the Lustrafjord. Upon arrival in Boverdalen, you'll spend the night in a secluded retreat, a mountain idyll with its old wooden architecture and forest location.

Included in the itinerary - Exploration of one of the most beautiful fjords in the country, the Geirangerfjord, by high-speed boat, with a guide.

Then continue north along Eagle Road, famous for its stunning views of the fjord, before taking the Linge-Eidsdal ferry. You'll then journey east to Alesund, a vibrant port city with an interesting history of Art Nouveau. Spend the night in the city.

You'll leave the port of Alesund and get on Troll Road, a majestic mountain route that winds between the valleys and joins the Atlantic Ocean Road to the northwest.

Something to see on the way - Kornstadffjord and the lovely village of Lyngstad.

On arrival in Averoy, a quiet little fishing port with colourful houses set on a piece of land facing the Norwegian Sea, you'll head to the boat where you'll be staying for the night. Averoy is full of charm, standing alone on its island, and has a unique atmosphere.

Now head off to Trondheim, which was Norway's capital in the Middle Ages and is now a 'bustling' university town. On the way, you'll stop off in Roros, a city built entirely of wood, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Stay overnight in one of Trondheim's most modern hotels, whose breakfast are famous.

Must-sees - Nidaros Cathedral - Fish Market - Ringve Museum.

Option - Extend your stay by two nights in Roros.

Flights to Bodo and connecting flight to Leknes, the second airport in the Lofoten Islands. Collect your second hire car and set off to the region of Reine, just south of the archipelago, where the mountains drop straight down into the ocean. Stay for three nights in a stunning setting in a 'rorbuer': a cabin on stilts that was once used by fishermen on long fishing voyages. The soul of these old lodges has not been compromised for the sake of comfort; far from it. The Bar Restaurant is Reine's oldest business. It serves fresh fish and local dishes, and the chef serves up traditional Norwegian fare.

The Lofoten Islands are ideal for doing many sports in breath-taking environments. Some can be done alone, others with a guide.

To see and do - The walking and cycling tour of the Glomtind (about five hours) that will take you off the beaten track to experience the splendid panorama of the Vestfjord and the west of the Archipelago (altitude of 1,572ft) - a day kayaking through the archipelago, with a break on a sandy beach - cooking the catch of the day (your own, of course) in your 'rorbuer'.
